MSc. Surgical Skills and Sciences

Course Overview

This unique programme offers the opportunity to develop or extend expertise in the established and rapidly developing areas of Laparoscopic Surgery and Endoscopy.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course students will have

  1. Ability to perform basic and advanced laparoscopy tasks.
  2. Ability to perform laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
  3. Ability to perform basic endoscopic tasks
  4. Ability to perform Gastroscopy and Sigmoidoscopy
  5. Ability to perform specific open surgical skills technique
  6. Ability to understand the tools and methodologies for conducting research.

Core Modules:

  1. Core Laparoscopic Skills
    This module will provide the student with a broad understanding and practical skills on Laparoscopic instrument manipulation e.g. Camera manipulation and orientation with precise Hand Eye Coordination, Bimanual movement and Depth perception..
  2. Laparoscopy Procedural Skills
    This module teaches practical skills and to provide a secure platform for subsequent development of   operative procedure like Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
  3. Basic and Procedural Endoscopyp surgery skills
    This module helps to develop proper skills on Endoscopic Instrument handling, and a sound Endoscopic technique for subsequent development of Gastroscopy and Sigmoidoscopy.
  4. Open Surgical Skills
    This module is designed to develop competence in essential surgical skills e.g. secured suturing , knot tying, artificial Bowel anastomosis techniques and proper handling of surgical instruments.
  5. Research Methods
    This module will provide you with a clear understanding of the concepts and theories surrounding the issues of research and critical appraisal along with academic writing.
  6. Dissertation
    Student will be required to complete a Master’s level dissertation in an appropriate research area.This will be an independent piece of research, requiring the student to conceive, plan and execute an appropriate piece of research based on academic foundations, application of relevant theory and methodology and critical analysis of findings.

Aim: The aim of this course is to develop operative surgical skills in General Surgery using simulation technology.  It’s intended that this MSc course will accelerate surgical training and improve technical skills which are essential for building confidence and competence in trainees.  Eligible students can enrol in our extended MSc course (18 months), which includes 12 months full time MSc study and a 6 month Clinical Attachment, to learn and observe clinical practice in the UK. The fee for this extended MSc is £27,100 for overseas students.
